History
Karnataka is a big state with the population of 6,11,30,704 (2011) and area is 191791 sq.kms. The Karnataka State is having 30 districts.  The IGNOU Regional Centre in Karnataka is located in Bangalore, the Capital of Karnataka.  The Bangalore is a part of South Karnataka, which is a part of developed region.  Hence, Bijapur, the backward area of the North Karnataka is considered to establish the IGNOU second Regional Centre to uplift the backward region.

The Rationale Behind the Establishment of RC Bijapur :
1.      To establish a Regional Centre in backward  area
2.      To uplift the status of enrolments of attached study centers in this region
3.      To establish the new study centres in uncovered districts of this region
4.      To maintain sustainable development of the rural areas of the region
5.      Finally to enhance the enrolments of IGNOU
The Regional Centre Bijapur was established during July 2011, but virtually functioning from January 2012.
